Before Claude Mathis arrived in 2008 for the first of his two stints as DeSoto's head coach, the school had won more than 10 games in a season just once in its history going all the way back to 1956. That high-water mark came in 1993, when DeSoto was 12-1 under Ben Dial. Now, double-digit win totals are commonplace, as DeSoto has won more than 10 games in five of Mathis' 11 full seasons, including last year's 14-2 season that ended with DeSoto winning the Class 6A Division II state title. DeSoto is 122-28 under Mathis, including 48-10 since he returned in 2019 following jobs as the running backs coach at SMU and the head coach at Marshall High School.
