SAN ANTONIO — When a team's best player is held to an uncharacteristically off night, that team almost always struggles to win. Almost always. Lake Highlands might just be the exception to the rule. With a stout defense lifting a sometimes-wavering offense, Lake Highlands beat DeSoto 52-44 in the 6A boys basketball state semifinals on Friday night at the Alamodome. Lake Highlands (33-3) will play Beaumont United (36-1) at 8:30 p.m. on Saturday in the 6A state championship game. The state's top-ranked team, according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches poll, Lake Highlands' hasn't won a state title since 1968.
