LUFKIN — Cypress Springs rode sophomore Ayla McDowell past the regional quarterfinals, advancing further than any other team in program history. The Panthers were looking to keep etching their name in the history books against the reigning back-to-back Class 6A state champions in a Region II semifinal Friday night at Panther Activity Center. Freshman Amayah Garcia scored a game-high 18 points while three others finished in double figures and DeSoto defeated Cypress Springs 66-34 to advance to its fourth regional title game in five years.
